William Hale arrived in Adelaide on the Earl Dalhousie in January of 1874 (74/1 Earl Dalhousie). The Earl Dalhousie sailed from London on 7th October 1873. William Hale had boarded her in London. The Earl Dalhousie embarked from Plymouth on 20th October 1873, arriving in Adelaide on 12 January 1874. She carried 384 passengers. During the voyage there were 3 births and 6 deaths. The total number of passengers landed was 381. One more death occurred in Port Adelaide, with the death of an infant. These were Government assisted immigrants, with the Government covering the cost of passage of £14 / 15 / - per head.

William was 18 years old on embarkation, and single. No occupations or counties of origin were recorded for any of the passengers.

EARL DALHOUSIE, ship, 1,047 tons, James Anderson, master, from London October 9, via Plymouth October 24. Rawlings And Cave, agents. Surgeon - Superintendent, Dr. Clutterbuck; Matron, Miss Wale, In The Cabin; and 381 Government passengers in the steerage.

EARL DALHOUSIE, from London - 265 cases, 405 casks, 151 kegs, 16 tins, 920 barrels, 60 qr. barrels, 220 half-barrels, 27 barrels, 329 tubes, 1 tierce, 600 bdls., 14,880 bricks, 5,918 boards, 2,999 deals and battens, 50 tons Tanfield coal.

MISCELLANEOUS

The EARL DALHOUSIE parted with her single women on Tuesday morning when the steamer Sophia early took them to the Port. The demand for labour must be great, for several employers were at the Semaphore Jetty to engage hands in the event of any eligible people landing there. The vessel will be towed into harbour as soon as the tides make up a little.
